This is the second installment of Niece Lorelei’s spiritual lessons. This one comes from a Christmas day moment when she once again caught me off guard. After spending a good amount of time opening her presents she turned to my sister and said, “Mommy, can I please have quiet time? Opening presents was really hard on me.” These are words you never expect to hear from a kid on Christmas after opening presents. At first I didn’t know what to think, then I realized that as young as she is she knew her limits. She somehow knew when she was done and had enough. This is something that most adults don’t get. It immediately took me to a scripture in the Bible where Jesus told us “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3-4.
I had a realization that a relationship with Jesus has a couple of requirements and they are 1) confess Him as Lord, and 2) become like a child. Simple, right? Then why do we have such a hard time with it? Confessing Him as Lord isn’t the difficult part for us, but rather the becoming as little children that gives us fits. This is mostly because we have a difficult time slowing down and letting God be God. We have a hard time letting go and letting Him do what He needs to. We are so busy “making” things happen that we don’t see we need a “quiet time” to sit back and just listen to Him and let Him refresh us. The Psalmist told us in Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I [am] God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” He’s telling us that sometimes we need to take a quiet time, shut everything down, and simply know that He is God!
Life is busy, I know! Trust me when I say that I know busy, but I am finding more and more that I have no excuse to not take time for God. I have no excuse to not get quiet and spend time with God, in His Word. Life is too short to be too busy to spend time with God. Life is too short to miss what He has for you by being too busy to hear Him and receive His direction. Today my challenge to you is to learn a lesson from a little girl who on Christmas day knew enough to say “I’ve had enough! I’m not doing another thing until I slow down and get quiet.” You can learn what I learned… stop, get quiet, and enjoy the day more. And whatever you do, let God be God and let Him do what is needed in your life.
