The other night I was reading through some of the blogs that I subscribe to. After reading two blogs I don’t get a chance to read that often I noticed a remarkable similarity between the two posts. Both of the men were talking about their small children and how when they changed their diapers both kids liked to reach down and grab a handful of their own dark chocolate goodness. That’s right! They like to play with their own poop! Amazingly, with the stories they were both making the exact same point… they loved their kids more than anything, even though they played with their own poop.
At first I thought it was just a mere coincidence that these two men would be talking about the same exact thing. The more I thought about it the more I started to realize it was no coincidence at all. I realized that God was talking to me. He was trying to tell me something that I had forgotten long ago. What He was telling me was that I like to play with poop. I like to mess around with the crap that He and that He loved me anyway. He loved me no matter what I said or did, or how I acted or treated others. He loved me regardless of whether I loved or respected myself.
I don’t know much about a child’s psyche, but I do know that at some point kids who like to play with their own poop grow up and one day realize that playing with poop isn’t cool anymore. They realize that there are better ways to entertain themselves than reaching down and grabbing a handful of a dirty diaper. Eventually they grow out of the childish ways and start to mature and learn more socially acceptable personality traits.
As disgusting as this sounds, I think that God was using this as analogy to show me the way we should be with sin in our lives. When we are young in Christ we struggle with things. We struggle with alcohol, sex, tobacco, and any other habits that our body and mind cannot seem to live without. This is mostly because we are young in our faith and don’t know any better. As we grow with God, though, we are supposed to let go of some of those things that we use to do. We should put God desires ahead of our own desires. We need to mature in our knowledge of God and His Word. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:11 “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” The truth is that no matter how much God loves us the way we are, He never intends for us to stay that way. He is always pushing us and challenging us to grow and mature in the things of God.
This may be your first poop blog, or maybe it’s not, but either way, the reality is that sometimes we all play with the poop. Sometimes we all struggle with issues. The question you need to ask is what is the poop in your life you like to grab hold of and what are you going to do about it? Are you going to refuse to grow up and insist on your own way, or are you going to mature in Christ just as you should mature in life? Playing with poop may be fun when your little, but eventually everybody stops hanging out with the people who refuse to stop playing with poop.Everybody reaches a point of maturity and works to put the things of youth behind.
What is the poop in your life? Is it something that you know you shouldn’t mess with or are you just now getting a realization that it is really poop? Where ever you are in your relationship with God you need to know that it is not so bad that God doesn’t love you anymore. In fact, I’d say He loves you just as much right now as He did when you first trusted Jesus as Lord, or the day you were baptized, or the first time you told someone about Jesus . Be real with yourself and don’t let the poop of life get you down. Don’t let it keep you from doing what you know is right. And most importantly, stop playing in it!
